課程概述

We will read through the book “Free Will, An Historical Introduction” by Ilham Dilman, Routledge 1999, pp. 273. The book has 4 chapters, which are:
1. Early Greek thinkers: moral determinism and individual responsibility. Homer, Sophocles, Plato, Aristotle.
2. The coming of age of Christianity: morality, theology, and freedom of will. St Augustine, St Thomas Aquinas.
3. The rise of science: universal causation and human agency. Descartes, Spinoza, Hume, Kant.
4. The age of psychology: reason and feeling, causality and free will. Schopenhauer, Freud, Sartre, Simone Weil, G. E. Moore, Wittgenstein.
Thus we will learn and discuss the views of 16 thinkers on free will through 2500 years or Western philosophy. If someone wants to include a thinker from Buddhism or Chinese thought, I will be open to this as well.
